Charlie Whitaker

Obituary of Charlie G Whitaker

CHARLIE GRAY WHITAKER, was born on April 21, 1947 in Ahoskie, North Carolina to the late Helen Bunch Whitaker and the late Charlie Gray Whitaker, Sr. Charlie was educated through the Philadelphia public school system, graduating from Overbrook High School. Charlie later enlisted in the United States Army, to serve his country. He proudly served for nine years, earning an honorable discharge. Following his term in the Armed Forces, he returned home and gained employment with the City of Philadelphia, Sanitation Department. He retired from the City of Philadelphia, after many years of service. Charlie met Mary A. Witherspoon. After years of courtship, they were united in marriage in the early 1960’s. From this union two daughters, Karen and Lisa and three sons, Keith, Darrick and Sean, were born. Charlie loved life and was a very caring person. Although a man of few words, when he spoke, everyone listened. With his comedic yet laid back demeanor, he always kept us smiling. Charlie enjoyed fishing, cooking and working on cars. He was also an avid sports fan. Although a Philadelphian, he was proudly apart of the Steelers Nation — “he loved his Steelers!” Charlie was preceded in death by: his mother, father and one daughter, Karen. Charlie departed this life on November 29, 2014. He leaves in mourning: his wife, Mary; one daughter, Lisa; three sons, Keith, Darrick and Sean; two daughters-in-law, Tonya and Shahidah; a special daughter, Selena Barkley; eleven grandchildren; five great -grandchildren; one brother, Ernest; one sister-in-law, Christine; mother-in-law, Lula Witherspoon; a special friend, Marcine Talley; four special companions, Tiny, Gucci, Lucky and Brandi; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
