Marie Elizabeth Payne, age 77, passed away on December 14, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born

on April 20, 1947, in South Carolina, she was the beloved daughter of the late Charlie Smalls and MaryJones Smalls.

Marie was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. She leaves

behind a legacy of love and cherished memories through her three children: William Eric Payne, DeJaris

Payne, and Thea Payne. She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces,

nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends who will forever carry her in their hearts.

Preceding her in death are her siblings, Abraham Coakley, William Gold Jr., Ellen Jones, Charles Jerome

Smalls, Clary Smalls, and Annabell Shaw, along with their spouses. Despite their absence, their bond

remains in the family’s history and hearts.

Marie dedicated her life to caring for others, retiring over a decade ago after a distinguished career as a

Certified Nursing Assistant. Known for her nurturing spirit, she provided compassionate care to the

elderly, often working tirelessly through double shifts and rarely taking a sick day. Even after retirement,

her heart remained with those she once cared for as she continued visiting residents at the nursing

home, offering companionship and joy.

She found immense fulfillment in feeding others, embodying the belief that no one should leave her

home hungry. Whether it was a neighbor in need, a passing friend, contractors finishing a job, or even

the stray cats outside, Marie ensured everyone was welcomed with a warm meal and an open heart.

Marie was also the life of every gathering, radiating joy and positivity. She loved to dance and

encouraged others to join her on the dance floor, leaving spirits uplifted wherever she went. Her vibrant

personality and unwavering kindness brought light to every room and every life she touched.

As we reflect on her remarkable life, we ask that you remember Marie not for how her journey ended

but for the countless ways she enriched the lives of those around her. Her compassion, selflessness, and
